About Vice Mayor Shekerjian

Onnie at Dedication

Onnie at ERIC Trailer

Onnie Shekerjian was elected to the Tempe City Council in May 2006 and was re-elected in March 2010.

Because Shekerjian and her husband, Brian, loved what the city had to offer families, they chose more than 27 years ago to plant their roots in Tempe. In that time, she has gained not just three children and two grandchildren, but more than two decades of experience in public policy through volunteering on more than 80 boards, commissions and committees related to public education, youth/family issues, technology, sustainability and the arts.

Currently, Gov. Jan Brewer has appointed Shekerjian to serve on the Arizona Ready Education Council and the K-20 Education Funding Taskforce. In addition, the Arizona Board of Regents has selected her to the Arizona State University Student Safety Task Force.

In the past, Gov. Jane D. Hull appointed Shekerjian to a five-year position on the Arizona State Board for Charter Schools, which she chaired for a year and served as vice chair for three more, while she also served for two years on the Arizona Parents Commission on Drug Abuse Prevention and Education.

Shekerjian’s great passion is making government work for people. She has authored numerous articles on the subject of advocacy and education for local and national publications. In recognition of her work in advocacy, she was a finalist for the Arizona State University 2001 Community Fellows Program.

Beyond her extensive volunteerism, Shekerjian has worked as a research and advocacy consultant for organizations, including the Thomas B. Fordham Institute, Internet Education Exchange, Morrison Institute for Public Policy at ASU and the Arizona Community College Association. Also, she is an honorary member of Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honor Society.
